Christmas Traditions continue in the US Virgin Islands

ST. THOMAS - The sound of voices in harmony floated across Emancipation Garden on Saturday morning as carolers took part in a Virgin Islands Christmas tradition that started 34 years ago as a progression of caroling traditions of yore.

One by one, choirs took the stage in the center of the park while people sang along in the early morning light.

Christmas lights sparkled before dawn as the show opened and the Voices of Love presented echo caroling from the Liberty Bell to Monsanto Bandstand.

Several groups and individuals were honored during the event. The Ulla Muller Elementary School Choir was presented with the Esther Marks Award. Francis Callwood, a choir director at Charlotte Amalie High School, was presented with the Esther Marks Award for his work passing on traditional music.

Luther Robles received the Hapless/Hopeless Award. We From Upstreet was presented with the Governor's Award and NĂ©omie Toussaint-Williams was named Honorable Choirs Conductor.

Richard Branson sells Virgin Islands resort

Various sources are reporting that billionaire Richard Branson has sold off Mosquito Island (also spelled “Moskito”) in the British Virgin Islands for the sum of $20.5M. The sale apparently happened back in August but only recently came to light.

This is the same island that Branson originally pledged to turn into a model sustainable resort — with 20 villas and a beachfront restaurant powered entirely by wind turbines and solar panels. He purchased the 124-acre beauty back in 2007 mainly because he was worried that someone else would destroy its natural beauty. The island sits only a mile offshore from Necker Island, Branson’s home in the Caribbean.

Even Vice President Biden visits US Virgin Islands

Vice President Biden is joining President Obama at the beach this week -- though the two will be 6,000 miles apart.

Biden is taking off with his family today for a week's vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, his office announced. The vice president had spent the Christmas holiday at home in Wilmington, Del.

Unfortunately for the president and vice president, the weather forecasts for their paradises are far from perfect. Temperatures will be in the 70s, but showers are predicted virtually every day this week in both places.
